Preparing the Backing
The backing fabric needs to be at least 10-12 inches wider and longer than the quilt top. This means having an extra 5-6 inches all the way around the quilt top. If you are using a WIDE BACKING, please supply at least an additional 12 inches (6 inches all the way around the quilt top). Wide backs can be unevenly wound on the bolt. Backings need to be “squared” to be placed on the longarm quilting frame and may change the size of your backing piece.
If your backing fabric is pieced, use 1/2 inch seam and press open. Please do not leave selvage inside the seam (seam allowance) because it causes the fabric not to move or stretch and may cause puckers or ripples in the seam area. You can leave the selvage on the outside edges.
Press the backing fabric so it is wrinkle free and seams lay flat.
Please be aware if you provide backing fabric that has a waxy feel, often found at Joann Fabrics, Hobby Lobby and Walmart, the stitching may not "nestle" right away across the entire quilt. The fabric will relax after use or wash.
Preparing the Batting
The batting should be 8 inches wider and longer than the quilt top. This allows an extra 4" all the way around the top.
I have batting on hand for your convenience. 90" wide Warm & Natural 100% cotton (unbleached), 96" Hobbs 80/20 cotton/poly blend (unbleached), and Quilters Dream in 90" wide and 120" wide...brand is subject to availability.
Preparing the Quilt Top
Be sure to clip as many loose threads from the back of the quilt top as you can. This is especially important if white fabric is part of your quilt because the threads can show through the quilt top and once quilted, they cannot be removed. You should also be sure your quilt top is square before it is quilted. The borders should lay flat. Wavy borders from having excess fabric in the border may occur. This excess fabric will cause the outside of the quilt not to lay flat and may result in puckers and folds may be necessary to make the border lay flat during the quilting process. Please view an online video on attaching borders if you need help.
Squaring the Quilt Top & Backing
Quilt top and backing should be square for best long-arm quilting results. Remember: backing and batting must be 5-8 inches larger than quilt top on each side (top, bottom, left and right sides). Use the guidelines below to determine squareness and trim as necessary:
